When it comes to branding, your logo isn’t just a symbol-it’s a statement.
In this article, we’ll go over seven top techniques for branding clothes-from the traditional finesse of embroidery to the cutting-edge cool of direct-to-garment printing. Each method has its charm and strategic advantages, making your logo not just seen, but remembered!
Screen printing
This method uses a stencil and a mesh to print logos on clothing. The logo is engraved onto the screen, and a blocking stencil prevents ink from reaching areas where it’s not wanted.
Each screen is capable of applying just one color, so multiple screens are necessary for designs involving several colors. The ink is then evenly spread across the engraved screen, and by applying consistent pressure across the screen, the design is transferred onto the fabric.
Historically, silk was the material of choice for this process, but today, synthetic threads have become the norm in screen printing. Polyester is the most widely used type of mesh, but screen printers also have access to specialty meshes made from nylon and stainless steel.
With a different screen being required for each color, this isn’t the best technique for logos that feature a variety of hues. However, when you consider that about 76% of the top brand logos have only one or two colors, according to Tech Report, you may want to lean towards a more minimalist approach with your design anyway.
Embroidery
Embroidery involves stitching a logo directly onto fabric using high-precision machinery, giving the garment a high-quality and professional appearance. Embroidery is particularly popular for corporate uniforms, high-end promotional wear, and personal apparel like polo shirts, jackets, and caps.
Embroidered logos are highly durable and can withstand heavy washing and wear without fading. In addition, the technique can be applied to various materials, including thick and textured fabrics where other methods might not be effective.
That being said, embroidery can be more expensive, especially for smaller runs, due to the setup and production time. There are also design limitations with this method for adding your logo to products, as fine details and color gradients cannot be accurately reproduced with embroidery.
Heat transfer
In this method, a logo is first printed onto special heat-transfer paper and then pressed onto the fabric using high heat. This technique is great for full-color images and can be used for both small and large batches.

This technique allows for vibrant, full-color image transfers and is versatile enough to accommodate both small custom orders and large productions. As heat transfer is relatively simple, it allows for quick production,which is ideal for meeting tight deadlines.
You do have to pay attention to your choice of material when availing of this method, though, as not all fabrics are suitable for the high temperatures required. And even if the material can withstand the heat, heat-transferred logos may crack or peel over time with washing and wear.
Sublimation
Sublimation printing involves turning dye into gas using heat and pressure, allowing it to bond directly with polyester fibers, creating vibrant and detailed images that are a part of the fabric itself. This method is particularly effective for producing colorful, all-over designs.
The great thing about sublimated logos is that they don’t crack, peel, or fade, maintaining their clarity even after multiple washes. Ideal for complex designs, sublimation ensures that the
print is part of the fabric, so it doesn’t alter the texture or add bulk.
That being said, this technique really only works well with polyester, restricting its use to specific types of garments. Furthermore, setup and production can be expensive, making it less ideal for small quantities. You’ll also need to be sure to use white or light-colored fabrics, as the dye doesn’t show on dark materials.
Direct to garment (DTG)
DTG printing is a process where a printer directly applies ink onto clothing using inkjet technology. It’s similar to printing on paper, but instead, designs are printed directly on fabric.
As DTG supports high-resolution images and can handle complex color gradients, it’s an ideal method for photographic and detailed artistic designs. This technique can also be used on a variety of fabrics, although cotton works best.
While quick setup times make it suitable for small runs and on-demand printing, reducing inventory needs, high initial equipment costs and slower production rates can make it more expensive per unit than bulk printing methods. It’s also worth noting that the quality of the print can depend on the type of fabric and pretreatment it receives.
Patch application
With patch application, patches can be created with the logo and then sewn or ironed onto the clothing. This adds texture and can be a durable way to showcase a brand, especially on items like jeans, jackets, and backpacks.
Patches can be applied to almost any type of fabric and garment, including those difficult to print or embroider directly due to their texture or build, providing plenty of flexibility. They can also be easily removed or replaced, allowing for garment reuse.
Keep in mind, though, that creating and applying patches involves multiple steps, which can increase production time and cost. What’s more, patches might not integrate as seamlessly with the garment as some direct application methods, potentially affecting the overall look.
Vinyl cutting
The vinyl-cutting method entails creating a design out of vinyl material, which is then cut to shape and heat-pressed onto clothing. This technique is favored for its precision in producing bold and simple designs, such as logos and text, especially useful for sportswear and event apparel.
A major plus of vinyl cutting is that vinyl graphics are robust and resistant to fading, peeling, and cracking, making them suitable for items that undergo frequent washing. Furthermore, vinyl cutting offers a wide range of bright colors, including neon and metallic shades.
This process isn’t ideal for designs with fine details or extensive color gradients due to the nature of the single-color cut-outs, however. In addition, while durable, the edges of vinyl can start to peel if poorly applied or after extensive use and laundering.
