Key difference: If your converter uses the Didot standard, 72 pt will not equal 2.54 cm. It'll be slightly larger. Most modern tools default to PostScript.
The Didot point still appears in some older European print workflows and legacy typesetting systems. For anyone working in contemporary design, PostScript is the correct reference.
Points appear in 3 main contexts in active design work.
Print production: font size, tracking, kerning, and line height in InDesign, Illustrator, and similar tools are all specified in PT.
CSS: the pt unit is a valid CSS length unit. Some email clients, including Outlook, still render font sizes in points rather than pixels (LinkedIn/Kristen Joseph, 2021).
Document formatting: Microsoft Word and Google Docs use PT for font sizes by default, even in regions where the interface shows centimeters for page margins.
A centimeter is a metric unit equal to 1/100 of a meter, standardized by the International System of Units (SI). In design and print, it is an absolute unit with a fixed physical size, which makes it directly convertible to PT using a constant ratio.
CM is used for physical print dimensions, page margin settings, and paper size specifications like A4 (21 × 29.7 cm) and A3 (29.7 × 42 cm).

Practical distinction: CM is what you'd verify with a ruler. PT is what you'd set in a type panel.
The formula is: CM = PT × 0.035278
This ratio is fixed and derived directly from 2 known constants: 1 pt = 1/72 inch, and 1 inch = 2.54 cm.
The math is straightforward:
1 pt = 1/72 inch
1 inch = 2.54 cm
Therefore: 1 pt = 2.54 ÷ 72 = 0.035278 cm
No rounding at the formula level. The result to 6 decimal places is 0.0352778. For print work, 4 decimal places covers all practical use cases.
72 pt = exactly 2.54 cm = exactly 1 inch. That's the anchor value worth knowing by memory.

Body text runs 10–12 pt (0.353–0.423 cm). Subheadings sit between 14–18 pt (0.494–0.635 cm). Display type at 48–72 pt reaches 1.693–2.540 cm, large enough to measure by hand.
Note on paper margins: a standard 2.5 cm page margin equals 70.87 pt. A 1 cm margin equals 28.35 pt. These values come up often when a printer requests all specs in one unit.
Manual conversion takes 3 steps.

Step 3: Round to the decimal precision your workflow requires (2 places for most print work, 4 places for tight tolerance jobs).

The 72 pt example is the best sanity check. If your manual calculation gives you exactly 2.54 cm, you're using the PostScript standard correctly.

CSS print stylesheets: browser-based converters and the cm CSS unit both accept physical measurements. A designer moving values from an InDesign print file into a CSS print stylesheet needs the exact CM equivalents.
Both tools let you set the document ruler unit independently from the type unit.
In InDesign: Edit > Preferences > Units & Increments. Set the ruler to centimeters for layout work while keeping the Character panel in points for type.
In Illustrator, the same logic applies. Page artboard dimensions in CM, text frames measured in CM from the ruler, font size always in PT.

Google Docs behaves identically. Page setup uses CM. Font panel uses PT. The 2 systems don't conflict, but they require manual reconciliation when unified specs are needed.

Type size ranges follow a fairly consistent logic across print production. Body text, subheadings, and display type each occupy a defined band in the PT scale.
Body text (9–12 pt = 0.3175–0.4233 cm)
This is the range most readers find comfortable for long-form print. Times New Roman, originally designed in 1931 for newspaper legibility, was set at 11–12 pt. Most professional print projects stay in this band for running text.
Subheading range (14–18 pt = 0.4939–0.6350 cm)
Used for section headers, pull quotes, and labels. 14 pt sits just above body text. 18 pt is clearly distinct without requiring display-weight treatment.
Display and heading range (24–72 pt = 0.8467–2.54 cm)
Anything above 24 pt reads as a heading at normal print distances. 72 pt equals exactly 1 inch, or 2.54 cm, which is the most reliable anchor value in the whole PT system.

A note on minimum legible sizes: 6 pt = 0.2117 cm is generally the floor for fine print in packaging, disclaimers, and legal copy. Below that, most readers can't read it without a magnifier.

MM is more precise for small measurements. A 1 pt difference at body text size is 0.035 cm, but 0.353 mm. For packaging labels where tolerances matter, MM gives you more usable decimal places without reaching scientific notation.
CM is the better choice for larger layout dimensions: page margins, column widths, bleed settings.
Straightforward split. US-standard paper formats (Letter, Legal, Tabloid) work in inches. International formats (A4, A3, B5) work in CM.
72 pt = 1 inch exactly. That clean ratio makes inch conversion especially easy to verify.
These are fundamentally different conversions. CM is a physical unit. PX to CM conversion depends on screen resolution (DPI), which varies by device. PT to CM does not.
Use PX when the output is a screen. Use CM when you're printing.

Not all converters are equal. The standard matters more than the interface.
PostScript: 1 pt = 0.035278 cm. Used by CSS, Adobe software, Figma, Word, and virtually every modern design tool.
Didot: 1 pt = 0.03761 cm. Found in some European legacy systems and older typesetting references.
The difference is small at body text sizes. At 12 pt, it's 0.4233 cm (PostScript) vs. 0.4513 cm (Didot). That's a 0.028 cm gap. Not catastrophic, but it compounds at larger sizes and over multiple specs.
Most online converters use PostScript without saying so. If a tool doesn't specify, test it: enter 72 pt. The result should be exactly 2.54 cm. Any other result means the tool is using a different standard.

Precision settings matter too. A tool that rounds to 2 decimal places shows 12 pt as 0.42 cm instead of 0.4233 cm. For most print work, that's fine. For tight-tolerance packaging jobs or multi-column layouts where small errors stack, use a tool that outputs 4+ decimal places.

PT is an absolute unit. It has a fixed physical size that doesn't change based on screen resolution, parent element, or browser settings. This makes it reliable for print specifications, unlike relative units like em or rem used in responsive web typography.
PT is a physical print unit tied to inches. PX is a screen unit tied to device resolution. They aren't directly interchangeable without knowing the DPI of the output device. For print work, always convert to CM, MM, or inches rather than pixels.
Type specifications use points. Page dimensions and physical layouts use centimeters. When a printer or client requests unified specs in one unit, or when working across US and metric-region teams, PT to CM conversion is part of the standard handoff process.
Adobe InDesign and Illustrator both handle it natively via unit preferences. Microsoft Word and Google Docs manage it internally between page setup (CM) and font panels (PT). Browser-based converters are useful for quick one-off conversions without opening design software.
Divide the centimeter value by 0.035278, or multiply by 28.3465. So 1 cm = 28.3465 pt, and 2.54 cm = 72 pt exactly. Use this when a printer spec is in CM and you need to match it in a type panel set to points.
CSS supports both, but PT is not recommended for screen-based font sizing. Most web designers use px, rem, or em for responsive layouts. PT in CSS is treated as a physical unit and can behave inconsistently across devices. Reserve PT for print stylesheets only.
