This Death Note font generator writes any name, title or line in the scratchy Death Note handwriting and turns it into an image you can save. Type, pick a scene, download.
It runs in your browser. No sign up, no watermark, and nothing you write leaves your device.
How to use this Death Note font generator
- Write your text in the line at the top. It shows up in the Death Note handwriting as you type.
- Pick a scene. Text only gives a clean image, the other four put your words on a notebook cover, a rules page, lined paper or a title card.
- Adjust the handwriting. Hand wobble makes each letter sit a little differently, and Rewrite by hand gives you a new take on the same words.
- Set the ink. Chalk white, ink black, blood red or any custom color, plus dry ink texture, pen pressure, ink bleed, glow and shadow.
- Choose a size in the Page panel: 4:5, 1:1, 16:9, 9:16, or Fit for a tight crop around the text.
- Download as PNG, PNG 2x or JPG, or copy the image straight to your clipboard.
The scenes at a glance
| Scene | What you get | Works well for |
|---|---|---|
| Text only | Your words on a plain or transparent background | Overlays, edits, logos |
| Notebook cover | A black notebook with your title in chalky white | Profile pictures, fan art |
| Rules page | White handwriting on black under HOW TO USE IT and a roman numeral | Custom rules, memes, quotes |
| Lined page | Black ink on ruled paper with a red margin | Name lists, journal posts |
| Title card | Big centered text with a red glow and a subtitle | Video intros, thumbnails |
Why the letters never look identical
A font repeats the exact same shape every time, which is the fastest way to make handwriting look fake.
This generator gives every letter a small random tilt, lift and size change, so two E's in the same word never match. Drag Hand wobble to 0 for a tidy line, or past 6 for a rushed, panicked scrawl. Each click on Rewrite by hand writes the same text again with a different hand.
Tips for cleaner results
- On the rules page, press Enter between rules and set Each new line starts with to a bullet or a dash.
- Long text wraps on its own on the rules and lined pages, and shrinks to fit when it runs out of room.
- White ink reads best on the dark scenes, black ink on the lined page and on transparent exports.
- The handwriting font covers English letters, numbers and Western European accents. Letters such as ș or ă are written as plain s and a, and the tool tells you when that happens.
- The font is for personal projects. Check the licensing notes below before you put a design on anything you sell.
What is a Death Note font generator?
A Death Note font generator is an online tool that turns typed text into an image set in a Death Note-style typeface, with no font to install.
You type a word, pick a font, and get a graphic back.
- Input: a plain text string, usually a title, a username or a short line
- Output: an image (PNG, JPG or SVG), not a font file. The generator on this page saves PNG, PNG 2x or JPG.
What it is not: the official logo, a downloadable font, or text you can edit once it is exported.
What font does Death Note actually use?
The logo is a gothic blackletter design, but sources disagree on whether any font file matches it exactly.
Made Good Designs (June 2026) describes the wordmark as a dense blackletter style built on medieval manuscript lettering, which suits a story about a notebook that kills.
Three sources, three answers:
- Fan font sites: two free fonts come close. Death_Font by Joshua1985 resembles the book cover, and Death Note by Rebirth Organization resembles the film poster.
- Made Good Designs: the wordmark is custom artwork and was never distributed as a font.
- Logos-World: the title typeface was designed for the project and released later as a full font set under the same name.
Logos-World is a logo-history site, not a type foundry or the rights holder, so that last claim carries the least weight.
One detail is firmer. The letter L uses as his signature is set in Cloister Black.
The generator on this page takes a different route. Instead of the blackletter logo, it uses a scratchy handwriting font called Death Note (MedRida, 2022) that echoes the hand-lettered notebook pages. That makes it a better fit for names, rules and journal lines than for titles that need to match the logo.
Treat every font a generator offers as an approximation of the artwork, not a copy of it.
Fonts a Death Note font generator can use, compared
These are the fonts that come up most often for the Death Note look, with what each one matches and what its license allows.
| Font | Source | Closest match | License note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Death_Font | Joshua1985 | Book cover title | No license stated |
| Death Note (death_note) | Rebirth Organization | Film poster | No license stated |
| Death Note (handwriting) | MedRida, 2022, used in this generator | Hand-lettered notebook pages | "All Rights Reserved" in the font file |
| Death Note Font Medium | karlibell22, made with Fontcapture (2009) | Name only, no series match stated | Free for personal use |
| Cloister Black | Dieter Steffmann | L's signature letter | Several labels, check the download |
| UnifrakturMaguntia | j. 'mach' wust | Logo's blackletter feel | SIL Open Font License 1.1 |
Fonts built to mimic the series
Death_Font and death_note exist to imitate the series artwork, which makes them the first two to try.
Neither listing states a license. Check the read-me file that comes with each download before using the result for anything beyond personal projects (designbeep makes the same point).
Death Note Font Medium is a name-alike. None of its listings claims it matches the cover, the poster or the logo.
It is filed as a display typeface, and version 1.000 dates to October 14, 2009.
Blackletter alternatives for the logo look
- Cloister Black: by Dieter Steffmann, and the font behind L's letter. Made Good Designs calls it the most common pick for a clean, classic match.
- UnifrakturMaguntia: on Google Fonts since 2010, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 (Font Squirrel's license page).
- Old English Text MT: the familiar default, though some Old English packages are personal-use only, per Made Good Designs.
Cloister Black turns up under several license labels (freeware, 100% free, available for commercial use). Read the license on the exact download you use.
For a clean gothic title, start with Cloister Black. For a web page that needs embedded fonts, UnifrakturMaguntia is the easier license to live with.
If none of these fit, other Old English lookalikes cover the same gothic ground.
Where the Death Note look breaks down
Blackletter titles work in short bursts and fail at small sizes, in long lines and wherever spacing is tight.
- Small text: Made Good Designs calls blackletter hard to read at small sizes or in motion, which is why the anime sets its subtitles in a plain broadcast sans.
- Stacked capitals: the same source warns that ornate gothic capitals turn illegible when set together, and recommends title case. DEATH_FONT pulls the other way, so choose per font: caps for its cover effect, title case for readable faces like Cloister Black.
- Tight spacing: dense strokes merge into a dark block unless letter-spacing opens up, which is what the Spacing slider above is for.
- Name collisions: the "Death Note" font on Creative Fabrica, by Almairatype Studio and listed in November 2023, is a modern, sporty display font with no tie to the series lettering. It is also subscription-only.
For tight letterforms, the fix is a downloaded font set as live text, where font spacing is yours to adjust.
Generated graphics also count as images of text. WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.5 (Level AA) asks for real text wherever text can produce the same look. The exceptions are images users can customize and cases where the exact presentation carries the meaning, and logotypes count as one of those cases (W3C, updated June 2026).
So a title graphic needs alt text, and anything readers must read in full belongs in HTML text.
Is the Death Note font free to use?
Most Death Note-style fonts are free for personal use only. Commercial use depends on the license of the exact font file, and the series name stays a trademark either way.
That makes font licensing rules the deciding factor for generated graphics, because an image follows the license of the font that made it.
| License tag | Personal use | Commercial use |
|---|---|---|
| Free for personal use | Yes | Contact the designer |
| Donationware | Yes | May require a donation |
| SIL Open Font License | Yes | Yes |
| Unknown | Not stated | Do not use if the designer cannot be reached |
Treat these tags as a rough guide. The license file inside each download decides.
The same logic applies to this page. The handwriting font behind the generator carries an "All Rights Reserved" notice from its designer, so keep the images it makes for personal projects.
Personal use: scrapbooking, flyers or invitations for friends and family, and T-shirts you make for yourself or friends without selling them.
Commercial use: business cards, logos, advertising, websites, company videos, and T-shirts, stickers or posters sold for money.
Individual designers can define these scopes differently, so treat the lists as the general rule.
The cleanest route for paid work is a font under the SIL Open Font License. SIL's OFL FAQ (version 1.1-update7, November 2023) says such fonts can be used for logos, posters, T-shirts and signage with no extra permission, and that no acknowledgement is required.
If UnifrakturMaguntia does not fit the look, browse other fonts that are free for commercial use before paying for anything.
Creative Fabrica's listing for its own Death Note font states that every download includes a commercial license. A commercial font license covers the font and says nothing about the series name.
Made Good Designs states that the Death Note name and logo are trademarks of the rights holders. Merchandise, a channel or a product cannot carry the wordmark or imply official affiliation, even when you set the text yourself in a blackletter font.
This is general information, not legal advice. If money rides on the design, ask the font designer for permission in writing.
