Read delta E carefully. Under 1 is invisible to most people, 1 to 2 is very close, 2 to 5 is usable as a reference, and anything above 10 means the ink and your pixel are simply different colours. A photograph also carries lighting, white balance and JPEG compression, none of which the ink is responsible for.

What the digits are telling you

Pantone runs two numbering systems that look nothing alike. One is for ink on paper. The other is for fabric, plastic and product. Mixing them up is the most common mistake in a brand guideline. Paper changes everything

Coated and uncoated are not the same color

A coated sheet is sealed, so ink sits on the surface and stays dense. An uncoated sheet is porous, so the same ink sinks in, scatters light and comes back lighter and lower in saturation. Nothing about the formula changed. Only the paper did.

This is why a guideline should name both codes. The C to U preview in the tool above is a calculation, offered so you can anticipate the direction of the shift. The real uncoated value is printed and measured separately by Pantone, so look it up rather than deriving it.

Quick rules by substrate

Cards
Business cards are usually uncoated or textured. Specify the U value or expect a lighter result than your mockup.
Packaging
Coated board most of the time, but check for varnish. A matte varnish pulls saturation down again. See packaging design for how colour sits alongside the other decisions there.
Newsprint
Very absorbent. Assume noticeable dot gain and choose a colour with room to darken.
Signage
Vinyl and powder coat have their own matching systems. Give the supplier the Pantone code and a physical chip.
Fabric
Use a TCX or TPG standard, not a PMS number. A print ink formula means nothing to a dye house.

Choosing a system

Pantone, CMYK, RGB and hex

Each one answers a different question. Pantone answers which ink. CMYK answers how to approximate that ink with four plates. RGB and hex answer what the screen emits.

Color Bridge Pantone's measured CMYK build of each spot colour, printed side by side with it. Deciding whether a spot colour survives a process print before you commit. It is a simulation. Some codes come back visibly different and you need a fallback.
Extended gamut Seven ink process, adding orange, green and violet to CMYK. Packaging runs that need many brand colours without many plate changes. Not every press or converter offers it. Ask early, because it changes how you build artwork.
RGB and hex Additive light values for screens. Hex is RGB written in base 16. Web, app and video work. No single correct hex exists for a Pantone code. It depends on profile and display.

Moving between those formats by hand is a waste of an afternoon. Dedicated converters exist for RGB to HEX, HEX to RGB, RGB to CMYK, CMYK to RGB and HSL to RGB. If you are working on screen and want a plain-English label rather than a number, the list of HTML color names is the quickest way to find one.

When PMS is the wrong system entirely

The Matching System covers ink on paper. If your colour lands on anything else, there is probably a different Pantone library that fits, and quoting a PMS number will just move the problem to your supplier.

Moulded product uses the Pantone plastics range, supplied as thick chips in opaque and transparent versions so you can judge colour at real wall thickness.

Cotton, paper and nylon standards for apparel and interiors. This is where the Color of the Year always lives, which is why it never has a PMS number.

Paint and coatings

RAL, NCS and BS

Architectural and industrial finishes use their own standards. Pantone does not map onto them cleanly, so measure and approve a physical sample.

Metallics, pastels, neons

Separate guides, because sheen and fluorescence cannot be represented by a flat value. A hex approximation of a metallic is always a lie of omission.

Adobe removed the bundled books between 2022 and 2023. Full libraries now come through Pantone Connect. CorelDRAW, QuarkXPress and Affinity have kept their own arrangements.

2000 to 2026

Every Color of the Year

The Pantone Color Institute has named a colour every year since 1999, with two named in 2016 and again in 2021. Note the format: these are fashion and interiors codes, not printing inks, so they carry TCX numbers rather than a PMS number. Select a name to load it into the tool.

The selection is a forecast rather than a measurement, which puts it closer to color psychology than to color theory. If you want to build a scheme around one of these, run it through a color palette generator rather than pairing by eye.

One famous code

Pantone 448 C, and the name it never had

448 C

In 2012 the Australian government commissioned research into the least appealing colour possible, for use on plain tobacco packaging. Around a thousand smokers were surveyed, and 448 C came out on top, or bottom, associated with dirt and tar. It has since been adopted for plain packaging in a long list of other countries.

The press dubbed it opaque couché, and the name stuck, but it is wrong. Opaque couché is simply the French label for the solid coated swatch library in Adobe Illustrator, not a name for this colour. Pantone's own description is drab dark brown. The Australian health department originally called it olive green and changed course after the country's olive growers objected.

It is a useful reminder that a code is a measurement and a name is marketing. Only one of the two survives a trip to the press.

Before you send files

Six things that stop a color going wrong

Most colour failures in print design are file problems rather than colour problems. Supply vector graphics wherever the artwork allows it, keep placed images at a DPI the press actually asked for, then work through the list below.

Naming

Keep the swatch name intact

A spot swatch renamed Brand Blue can silently convert to process on output. Leave the Pantone name exactly as the library wrote it.

In your swatch panel the colour type must say spot. A process swatch carrying a Pantone name will separate into four plates.

Duplicates

Merge near identical swatches

186 C and 186 CP in the same document produce two plates. Run a swatch audit before you package the file.

Overprint

Decide knockout or overprint

A spot colour set to overprint on a dark background mixes with whatever sits underneath. Confirm the intent with your printer.

Proofing

Ask for a wet proof on critical color

Digital proofs simulate. If the colour is the brand, request a press proof on the actual stock and sign it.

Pantone advises replacing guides roughly every twelve to eighteen months. Ink and paper both shift with light and air.

Questions

Things people ask about Pantone codes

Is there an exact hex code for a Pantone color?

No, and this trips up a lot of teams. A Pantone code describes a physical ink measured under controlled lighting. Hex describes light emitted by a screen. Converting between them needs a colour profile, a rendering intent and an assumption about the display, and different tools make different assumptions.

What you get here, and from every conversion chart on the web, is a close approximation for screen use. For anything printed, work from a current physical guide or a measured value from a licensed Pantone tool.

Why did Pantone colors disappear from my Adobe software?

Pantone changed its licensing model with Adobe in early 2022. The bundled colour books began to be phased out of Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop from 16 August 2022, and with the October 2023 release the last three remaining books were removed as well.

Full access now runs through the Pantone Connect plugin on Adobe Exchange, which carries its own subscription. Files created before the change still open correctly, but older Photoshop builds from late 2022 rendered missing spot colours as black, so re-specify anything that came through that window.

What is the difference between a spot color and a process color?

A spot colour is one premixed ink laid down by its own plate. The result is consistent because the recipe is fixed, and it can reach hues four colour printing cannot.

A process colour is built from overlapping dots of cyan, magenta, yellow and black. It is cheaper on multi colour jobs, but the outcome depends on press conditions, dot gain and stock.

How many Pantone colors are there?

The current Formula Guide covers 2,390 spot colours for graphics and printing, after an expansion that added 224 new PMS colours to the previous set of 2,161. The Fashion, Home and Interiors cotton library holds roughly 2,625 standards.

Add the metallics, pastels, neons, plastics and SkinTone ranges and the total across all Pantone systems runs to several thousand more.

My printer says they cannot match my Pantone color. Why?

Usually one of three reasons. The job is four colour process and your ink sits outside the CMYK gamut, which is common with bright oranges, vivid greens and deep blues. The substrate is absorbent or tinted, so the ink cannot reach full density. Or the code is a fashion or plastics standard rather than a printing ink, so no press formula exists for it.

Ask for the Color Bridge equivalent. It shows the closest achievable process build next to the spot colour so you can judge the shift before you commit.

Can I use Pantone codes for a website or app?

Only as a reference point. The deliverable has to be RGB or hex. Take the approximate value, then test it in context and run it through a color contrast checker, because a colour that reads well as a large flat panel often fails as small text.

Many brands run a slightly adjusted digital value that reads closer to the printed ink in practice. Documenting that difference in the brand guidelines is normal and sensible.

Do I need a license to use Pantone colors?

Specifying a colour in your own design work does not require a licence. What is protected is Pantone's intellectual property: the names, the numbering system, the colour libraries and the reference materials.

Redistributing their colour data, bundling their libraries into a product, or building a commercial matching tool is a different matter. Take proper legal advice if that is your plan.

What is Color Bridge and when should I reach for it?

Color Bridge is a guide that prints each spot colour next to Pantone's own measured CMYK simulation of it, with hex and RGB values listed alongside. Use it whenever a job cannot carry a fifth plate and you need to see the compromise honestly before the client does.

Why do two Pantone chips of the same code look different?

Age and light. Printed guides fade, particularly the yellows and warm reds, and daylight speeds it up. Two guides bought years apart will not agree.

Judge colour under standardised D50 viewing conditions rather than office lighting, keep guides in their sleeve, and replace them roughly every twelve to eighteen months.

Can I convert a Pantone color to RAL?

Not reliably by calculation. RAL is a separate European standard built mainly for paint, powder coating and architectural finishes, with its own measured references. The two systems overlap in places but they were never designed to map onto each other.

The workable route is to measure. Have your supplier read the Pantone chip with a spectrophotometer and find their nearest RAL, then approve a physical sample on the actual material. Any RAL number produced by a hex conversion is a guess.

What does the U in a Pantone code mean?

It marks the uncoated version of the same ink. Same formula, different paper. Uncoated stock absorbs ink, so the colour comes back lighter and less saturated than the coated version.

The uncoated value is measured separately, it is not calculated from the coated one. Look it up rather than deriving it.

Should a brand guideline list one code or several?

Several. A complete entry in a brand style guide gives the coated code, the uncoated code, the process build, the RGB and hex values, and where relevant the fashion, plastics or paint standard.

One code covers one substrate. Everything else becomes a guess made by whoever produces the work, which is how a visual identity drifts apart across suppliers.

They are not measured colour data, and the CMYK values are derived arithmetically from the screen value rather than taken from Pantone's own process builds. Do not use them as a substitute for a current physical guide or a licensed Pantone reference when specifying print, packaging or manufactured product.
