To unlock a Canva page, select it and click the unlock icon, or press Alt+Shift+L. You need edit access to the design for either one to work.
While a page lock is on, Canva won’t let you unlock individual elements. Unlocking the page also leaves any element locks in place (Canva Help Center, checked October 2026). So if the page still won’t take edits afterward, the leftover locks are on single elements, and the floating toolbar clears those.
One exception. A lock set by a teacher in an Education brand can’t be removed by students, edit access or not.
How to Unlock a Page in Canva

Select the locked page, then click its unlock icon or press Alt+Shift+L. Canva’s Help Center article on locking and unlocking pages lists both routes (checked October 2026).
Anyone with edit access to the design can lock and unlock it, so check that first. A view-only account is the first thing to rule out.
- Open the design in the Canva editor.
- Click the locked page, or its thumbnail in the page panel, to select it.
- Click the unlock icon for that page, or press Alt+Shift+L.
- Click an element on the page and try to move or edit it.
- If something still will not budge, unlock it from the floating toolbar.
The shortcut saves you hunting for the icon. It’s one of many editor keys listed in this Canva cheat sheet.
Canva’s help page puts the lock icon on the editor toolbar, while Guideflow’s tutorial calls it an Unlock page button in the top toolbar. The wording differs but the step is the same. Select the page, then use the unlock control.
These steps follow the desktop instructions. The Help Center has a separate mobile tab.
Unlocking the page does not clear locks placed on individual elements. Those need their own unlock.
How to Unlock Individual Elements After the Page Is Unlocked
Select the locked element and click Unlock or Unlock position on the floating toolbar. The page has to be unlocked first, because Canva blocks element unlocks while the page lock is on.
Unlocking an element from the floating toolbar
Which icon you see depends on how the element was locked. Unlock appears for a full lock on position, style and content. Unlock position appears for a position lock, the kind that already lets you edit the content. Either way, once you click it the element moves, resizes and takes style changes like anything else.
When the lock icon blocks selection
Sometimes an element won’t select and all you get is a lock icon. Click that icon and toggle through the lock options until the element frees up, then repeat for any other element that still resists edits. The same routine applies if the page stays uneditable after you’ve unlocked the page itself.
In Education accounts, a hover message reading “Lock cannot be edited” points to a teacher-set lock, and no toggle clears it.
If the locked element is buried under others, the Layers tab in the Position panel shows the stack, so you know which item you’re clicking.
Layerpath’s guide adds a check for grouped elements. Canva’s Help Center doesn’t mention grouping, so treat that as a secondary check after the toggle.
Lock vs Lock Position Only: What a Page Lock Covers
A page lock covers every element and the background on that page. Elements carry their own lock type too. A plain Lock freezes position, style and content, while Lock position only freezes position and style and leaves the content editable.
| Lock type | What it locks | Unlock control |
|---|---|---|
| Lock | Position, style and content | Unlock icon on the floating toolbar |
| Lock position only | Position and style, content stays editable | Unlock position icon on the floating toolbar |
| Page lock | Every element and the background on the page | Unlock on the page, or Alt+Shift+L |
Before unlocking anything, think about what you’re actually changing. New text or a swapped image works fine under a position lock. Only moving, resizing or restyling needs the unlock.
Template builders use this split on purpose. Canva’s own example is a template where people only update text and an image, so the text box and the image frame get a position lock and everything else gets a full lock to protect the layout.
Brand logos and background images are the obvious full-lock candidates in a Brand Template, and decorative elements usually go in with them. Position locks fit event flyers where the details change but the layout doesn’t. Social templates where users swap photos in frames work the same way.
Whoever set a lock chose that type deliberately, which is worth remembering before you strip it from a shared template.
Why Can’t I Unlock a Canva Page?
Start with access, since Canva’s shared-design troubleshooting does. View-only or comment-only access stops an unlock, and so does a design shared to a different team or account, or one that was never shared with you. Two rarer cases remain: a design under moderation on Canva’s China site, and a lock set by a teacher in an Education brand.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix | Who can fix it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cannot edit, only comment or view | Can view or Can comment access | Ask for a re-share with Can edit | Design owner |
| Link shows no design | Design not shared with your account | Click Request Access | Design owner |
| Shared design will not open or edit | Wrong team, or personal account | Switch team, or ask for a direct share | You, or the owner |
| Lock screen over the whole design | Design under moderation (Canva’s China site) | Read the moderation notice, then contact Canva Support | Canva Support |
| Lock stays after you gain edit access | Lock set by a teacher in an Education brand | Ask the teacher to change it | Teacher (brand admin or brand designer) |
In the Share menu, Can edit gives edit and comment access, and that’s the level the unlock steps need. Can comment is comment-only and Can view is view-only, and both come with a route to request edit access.
The owner changes a person’s level from the Share menu, so the fastest fix for a viewer or commenter is a short message asking for Can edit.
If a link shows nothing, log in, open it and click Request Access. Canva emails the owner, then emails you once access is granted, with an Open design button.
Team mix-ups look the same as missing access. A design shared to a team stays out of reach from a personal account or another team, so open your profile icon and look for the check mark beside the team you are on.
Moderation screens appear on Canva’s China site, where Canva’s help center describes a lock-icon screen for designs under moderation. That lock icon is a design-level status, not a page lock, so the unlock steps do not apply.
When Unlocking Is Not Possible: Teacher Locks, Brand Templates and Canva Docs
Edit access won’t help in Education brands where a teacher set the lock, or in Brand Templates, where only admins and brand designers manage locks. Canva Docs is a third case, since it has no lock feature at all.
| Context | Who can change the lock | Constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Education brand design | Teacher (brand admin or brand designer) | Students cannot unlock, even with edit access |
| Brand Template | Admins and brand designers | Locks are set before publishing, so changes mean edit and republish |
| Canva Docs | Not applicable | Locking pages or elements is not available |
Teacher-locked elements in Education brands
Students can’t unlock a teacher-locked element, and Canva calls that expected behavior.
This applies in Education brands with the CEDU, CEDD, CEDS or CEMS feature bundles, where a teacher is a brand admin or brand designer and a student is a brand member. It covers designs shared directly with students and designs used in Live Learning Sessions, as well as assignments shared via link, Canva or an external LMS.
A lock that looks like a mistake goes back to the teacher, since no student-side workaround exists. Teachers who want students to type into a fixed layout can choose Lock position only, which leaves content editable.
Brand Template locks and Canva AI
Canva’s two help pages describe locks from different angles. The general lock page says locking works the same way for all users and brands outside Education, so edit access is what lets someone unlock an element in their own design.
The Brand Template page covers a different right. Only admins and brand designers can apply or adjust locks in the template itself. When a lock blocks a change in every new design, the fix sits in the template, which an admin or brand designer edits and republishes.
Locks matter most once Brand Templates are linked to a Brand Kit, because that link lets Canva AI generate designs that match the brand.
When Canva AI generates new designs, it respects every lock level, including Lock position only, during the initial generation. Editing an existing design is different. There all locks are treated alike, so content inside a locked element may not update, even under Lock position only.
Canva’s page says this will be improved, so recheck the Help Center wording before relying on it (as of October 2026). Until then, a blanket Lock All or Design Lock reads as a full lock to Canva AI, and edits to partially locked elements are done by hand.
Canva Docs
Canva Docs has no lock feature. Canva’s lock page states plainly that locking elements or pages is not available there.
A Doc that refuses edits points to another cause, such as view-only access.
Unlocking a Canva Page FAQ
Can I lock a single element instead of a whole page?
Yes. Select the element, then click Lock on the toolbar. Holding Shift while clicking selects several elements at once, so a single lock action covers all of them.
How do I lock a page again after editing it?
Select the page thumbnail, click the More icon, choose Lock page, then choose Lock. The page lock covers every element and the background on that page.
Can locks be applied after a Brand Template is published?
No. Locks need to be set before publishing, so Canva advises testing them yourself first. Changing them later means editing and republishing the template (Canva Help Center, as of October 2026).
Does a page lock stop someone from deleting the page?
In Brand Templates, yes. A Page Lock blocks all edits, including deletion, while Page Lock position only allows some edits but still prevents deleting or moving the page (Canva Help Center, as of October 2026).
Which text settings does Lock position only freeze?
In a Brand Template, it freezes font, size, color, alignment, capitalization and bullet points, plus line spacing, transparency and links. The text itself stays editable. Images and frames freeze effects, filters, adjustments and flipping instead.
Which Lock to Reapply After Unlocking a Canva Page
Reapply Lock position only to the text boxes and image frames collaborators will change, and skip the page lock. A page lock freezes the whole page, so every later text edit starts with an unlock.
Put Lock position only on the text and frames people edit, then a full Lock on logos, backgrounds and layout pieces. The page lock goes last, and only if nothing needs editing. Canva refuses element unlocks beneath a page lock, so each later change to a locked element costs one extra step.
Lock position only trades protection for flexibility. Collaborators can still overwrite text and swap images.
This order comes from Canva’s lock behavior as of October 2026, and a change to the page-first rule would reorder it.
With the locks set, sharing the design as a Canva template is the next step for collaborators.
