Rado Javor – digital painter

Choiceness, class, style. I’d like to think that the work of Slovakian Rado Javor could be resumed to these 3 words but that’s not possible. We find out that this digital painter from UK has an apetite for classic, for moments and scenes from the past and what’s extraordinary is that he succeeds in imortalizing those superb sceneries with his Wacom and Photoshop. He almost leaps you back in time to see closely with your eyes the world in those times. Although some of the images found in this digital art gallery have a dark hue most people will like them. You’ll see images of conflicts, envolving machinery and technology from different ages and an infusion of quality detail.

La Rochelle

La Rochelle digital painting

Finally i can start to post my newer works. I have some 5 pictures and wil lpost them in next 2 months hopefully.
This is a painting for the new project of the Creative Assembly.

The name of the game is Empire: total war. As I love to paint old ships I really enjoyed working on those pictures. This is only first one, the rest is waiting to be published.
The Image captures early mornig mood in huge french harbour La Rochelle, year 1715. The big ship on the left is the grandious Le Louis Quinze, most beatifull and biggest ship of its age.
I did try to make the ship as real as possible, reference was the model in naval museum in Paris. The general mood of the picture is maybe similar to some old oils from the 18.th century, that was my small goal.

The whole pic was done in about 30-40 hours. Original size is something like 2600pix so it was somehow hard to finish.

HMS Royal George

HMS Royal George digital painting

Again my favourite theme. Artwork for the game Total war:Empire. This one was my biggest and most complicated painting, so I hope It was worth the time spend I have finished this piece some year ago, but cant post it because the marketing policy.
It shows the Battle of Quiberon Bay near coast of France. The ship on the right is HMS Royal George, pride of the british navy with almost 900 souls on the board. The battle fas fought in late november so the weather was very bad. Ship on the left is french La Superbe, and this ship ended very bad at the end.
I painted the ships as they were, based on many historical resourcess: paintings, engravings and models. And of course a bit of my imagination. No other references were used.
As I said this was my biggest work till now. Original res is 3000×1500, it takes me about one month to finish. Done in Photoshop CS3 from the start. I’ll be happy to see your commnets and critics.

The Pumpkin King

The Pumpkin King digital painting

I cant refuse to make another halloween picture. I love this season and the special atmosphere of this day. My imagination is again directed to the colonial america, age of first settlers and wich trials. I tried catch the atmosphere of this time in a small village where the children are dancing along some old obscure idol. All creatures are drawn to him to celebrate this night.

Battle Ship

Battle Ship digital painting

One of my older works. Almost 2 years old. Its an fantasy atrwork for the Elveon project, the game will be released this year. Capital ship crushing the enemy fleet, with the help of divine artefact on the prove. The ship should look very big, full of war machines. My own design. Hope you like it. Ps+wacom

Study Of Light

Study Of Light digital painting

Another one of my older works, about 2 years old. This time I was trying to paint the light and do a fast painting practise. So this was a rather quick sketch for me (9hours), also because I have an Inspiration. Its not as detailed, I want to keep it more rough, the main focus is just light. I have some reference photos for the architecture from St.Peters in Rome.

New Land

New Land digital painting

Some old picture, that I didn’t publish at the time. Done some 2 years ago, for the project Elveon. It shows Landfall of a mighty elvish race. My inspiration was Tolkien (of course), his Númenórean race. The Ship is my creation, based maybe on some greek or roman designs. Done in photoshop, in some 35-40 hours. There is a lot of details which takes me ages to do

The Armada

The Armada digital painting

In the summer of 1588, one hundred and thirty ships carrying 30,000 men set out to conquer England. This is my vision of the glorious moment when the fleet is leaving Lisbon. In the foreground is the flagship San Martin. Ships design is based on reference plans that I could find on net. But its not much there about those spanish galleons of this age. So I must use my imagination
All is done in photoshop, +wacom, in about 20-30 hours

Titan

Titan digital painting

Warhammer again, picture from times of Horus heresy. This is the final fight between imperial forces against the chaos invasion. One of the last battle Titans resists the innumerable masses of the traitors legions. Was a little hard to paint the perspective. I have some photos of warhammer models for refrencing.

Imperial Walker

Imperial Walker digital painting

Some Star Wars Inspired picture after very long time. When I was reading very good technical website about the starwars, I’ve found picture of the leg and small comment of one amazing machine. This Is my vision of superheavy Imperial battle walker.
My intention was make a new design of a huge war machine, of course somehow similar to AT-AT. So I didnt have much space for experiments.
This walker much bigger than his older brother about twice in height. The desingis using some elements from the battleships of the Empire. Weapons: one turbolaser, eight heavy lasers and many heavy blaster cannons. The picture captures flawless crushign of the rebels defence positions on some cold planet (not Hoth). Rebellion have no weapons that can harm this machine.

The walker is based on simple 3d model(done in 1hour). The rest is playing with many layers in photoshop. the small at-st and some planes done form the reference. Picture was done half on cintiq tablet, the rest Intuos3. Time about 25-30 hours, just 2 hours a day after work.

Scarecrow

Scarecrow digital painting

Simple picture trying to catch the atmosphere of halloween night in colonial american countryside. Maybe in Maryland in 18th century. Done in about 12 hours, so very quick for me . And please, if you can watch this picture only when is dark outside. This was done for the last year halloween holiday

Republic cruiser

Republic cruiser digital painting

My favourite ship form Star Wars. Its not very well-known, maybe because it was seen only for some seconds at the beginig of episode one. But i think the design of it is great. Corellian diplomatic cruiser, lost years ago on some dark planet. I hope I can make some story about it, maybe connected with some other SW pics in the future.
Strarted as a quick pic, but somehow i started to play with details so it was about 30hours at the end. Wacom intuos+photoshop as always.

Ice Storm

Ice Storm digital painting

Some quicker picture between the works for my company.
I like planes from my childhood but this is a first time that I’ve paint some.
Its not an classical aviation art, but I hope you will like it. Its a F-4c Phantom from Air Defence Command squadron, based on Iceland. So I want to catch the hard weather conditions in which the planes have operated.
Those Phantoms were assigned with the defending of the norhern atlantic.
Done in Photoshop CS3 Beta + intuos3 , with the help of some custom brushes. Refs used, some photos of plane and 3d model for perspective.

The Fire

The Fire digital painting

My most complicated picture in last time. But also my favourite theme again. I spend days on paintig just the fire and light effect on this picture. The goal was make a monumental painting like in the old times.
For history fans it is a battle in Vigo bay between spanish and british fleet. All ships should be historicall correct as in begining of 18th century.
The whole picture was done in about 35 hours stretched in about 3 months. Just photoshop+ wacom intous.
Please bear in mind Its a Creative Assembly copyright .

Baghdad

Baghdad digital painting

Some personal work after all those ships. Restfull evening in the Baghdad city. I hope that there will be more such a days without the killing. So hope you’ll like it because slightly optimistic.
I played with the light in sligtly different way than on my last pictures. I wanted to paint some refracting ligt in darker street, but its not easy. I used refrence for the APC Stryker and the characters, hope they look realistic.
All done in photoshop as usually+ wacom intuos. Time spend was about 25 hours.

The Battle

The Battle digital painting

Im starting to post some pictures from last year, They are done for total war game.
This is a huge 18th centure battle somewhere in Scotland. It was a bit hard picture for me because the numbers of soldiers.

Very hard to paint the right atmospere, I was almost lost in the lines of men. Some of the important soldiers are done with the help of my friend chris, who can paint humans really good.
Atmosphere was most important in this work, so rain and wind cant stop the british infantry from figting.

Done in photoshop +wacom tablet, some 30 hours.

Low tide

Low tide digital painting

My first picture done with the help the new cintiq tablet. This picture have even some personal value to me. It is inspired by some beatifull places in the south england, on coast of the Sussex.
I still have these images in my head and they helped me to make this picture.
Story is about old British flying boat, resting in some navy harbour. Now his best years are gone long time ago. It is the year 1937 and the machine is allready obsolete. It was build for the empire which is just at at the end of its existence. The picture is a little bit melancholic, but I hope somebody will like it.
Done in photoshop, the airplane proportion are based onthe simple 3d model. Then some painting in photoshop on intuos tablet. In about a half of the production I got the cintiq and the picture was finished on it. Apart of the seagulls, they are too delicate for cintiq.

Time about 20-25 hours on evenings after work.

Trick or treat

Trick or treat digital painting

Halloween is near, so here is a seasonal picture. I love this season so cant resist to pain another pic. It was a rather quick work, about a 15 hours or so. Hope you like it.
Done s always photoshop +wacom.

Admiral

Admiral digital painting

Some older commision for Uk edition of PC gamer magazine. My first big character, and I must say it was hard.
Some of my friends helped me with the face and hands and some other details. Picture was done again for the game Empire : total war.
Im aware of some not natural proportions of the guy, but its just my first one. The picture was done quiet qick in some 10 days. Done in Photoshop on wacom intuos.

Belfast

Belfast digital painting

The hallowen evening in Northern Ireland. This picture captures my memories and feelings of Belfast. Of course I am too young to see the worst years of civil disorder, so the burning vehicle is inspired from the photos. But everything else, especially the weather is exactly such as I remember.. Hope you like it, even when its rather depresive picture.

Starstrutter

Starstrutter digital painting

As promised, one interesting wwI plane. I paint it because I really like the unusual design. Its an austria-hungarian figter nicknamed Starstrutter or flying coffin
Second thing is that Im coming from the same city as the pilot of this plane. He was the best pilot from hungary in wwI. On the picture he is defending the port on adriatic against Italian bombers.

Technically, I had a 3d model done by my friend which was used for basic perspective. Rest is painting in photoshop with a big help from custrom brushes done by other frined. But generally I went to sligtly different and more dramatic style.

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes digital painting

Finally some personal work after long time. This time someting different.
Im a big fan of A.C Doyle novels so have painted something from his books about Sherlock Holmes. This is my vision of the great detective listening to young lady in need. She had some dark and complicated story for his analytic mind. I’ve tried to paint somehow intimate victorian atmosphere.

The picture was quiet hard for me because i’ve never painted so big characters, so maybe there are some not correct anatomy deails.
I will welcome some comments. Only reference was used for sherlock face and the lady costume. all done in photoshop.

    Hi Design Your Way,

I note the pictures with titles, La Rochelle, HMS Royal George, Battle Ship, New Land, The Armada, The Fire, and the Admiral and find them interesting. There are many episodes within the pictures that are also of great interest.

As part of my first pilot project on the Ballincollig Gunpowder Mills I will be assembling a clip to reflect the Napoleonic Wars. This is relevant to the story as the British Board of Ordnance acquired the mills complex in 1805. In response to the war effort they redeveloped the site and greatly increased its production capacity.

I am seeking to assemble a clip from stills to support this part of the narrated story line. The narration will be further supported by a background audio of cannons firing etc. I approximate that the clip would be about 15 seconds long.

Would you be interested in having the material used in such a fashion and would you give permission for such use? The source of the material would be credited at the end of the production.

    Thanking You,

    Pat Flynn

Incredible work. I am a painter and I can’t believe you can achieve such great chiaroscuro with photoshop. Sometimes I work with photoshop (cs4) and a wacom bamboo tablet, but was not even aware that you could create work like yours with this equipment. Recently I heard of another program called corel painter, and I thought in order to achieve realism that corel would have to be used. You have mastered photoshop and have given me something to shoot for! Thanks for sharing.
